FAQ Regarding Screw Machined Components and Turning

How long does it take to get an estimate?
Usually instantly. Just kidding. But it’s very fast. If you need it right away we can accommodate you. Call Magnus if you just can’t wait.

Are your parts guaranteed ?
Yes, parts are guaranteed. If they don’t “meet the print,” they will be replaced or fixed free of charge. Magnus is also ISO 9001:2008 registered.

I’m new to all of this. (If  you’re an expert, see the next question below.) Can you have someone explain your manufacturing process to me in more detail?
Yes, happily. Please call and ask to speak to Ed Magnuski. He can explain how Magnus Screw Products can work with you on your project in more detail, especially as it relates to your individualized needs.

I’m an expert. I just want to start my job immediately. Can I just call your offices and get going on one of your machines?
Yes, you can. Call Magnus right away to get started. We specialize in rush jobs and can likely accommodate your schedule.

What is ISO 9001:2008 registration and why is Magnus registered by the International Organization for Standardization?
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) registration ensures that Magnus Screw Products has a Quality Management System in place. You can learn more about ISO 9001:2008 here.

What is the maximum size that Magnus can manufacture?
Magnus is skilled in delivering screw components with an outside diameter of up to two inches and almost any length.

What “Secondary Services” does Magnus offer?
All of the same services that Magnus offers to customers can also be used as part of a secondary service. “Secondary services” are any on-site services that are performed after the primary service (or “job”) has been completed. When possible, all of the customer’s requirements are incorporated into the primary job. In some cases, however, additional work is required to complete the job that can’t be completed in one pass. For example, a customer may want a metal knob with knurling. The knob would be created in the first step and then the knurling would be created afterwards, as a secondary service. Magnus is unique in that it has a dedicated department that works 12 hours/day on providing secondary services. In addition to these secondary services, Magnus has a working-relationship with many outside companies that can provide customers with services like grinding, plating, powder coating, etc.

What is CNC or a “CNC Machine”?
“CNC” stands for Computer Numerical Control, and is a technology typically used in machines where a computer controls the motion of the machine. A “CNC Machine” is a computer-controlled machine that creates parts to extremely tight tolerances. Magnus Screw Products proudly uses CNC machines in its manufacturing operations.

What is a “turning”?
 “Turning” is where the part is spun and created by integrating all of its design features on one axis. Everything has to be symmetric to the axis for a turned part. See example picture of a turned part.

What is “broaching"?
“Broaching” is where a round hole is drilled into a part in order to facilitate the creation of square or hexagonal inside features. For example, a round hole would be drilled into the top of a screw in order to then “broach” it to create a socket head cap screw. See example picture of a broached part.

What is “cross-drilling"?
“Cross-drilling” is where a rotating, cutting tip is used to drill a hole in a part on the axis opposite the primary drilling of a part.

What is “drilling"?
“Drilling” is where a rotating, cutting tip is used to make holes in a part.

What is “knurling"?
“Knurling” is where diamond-shaped or straight tooth scoring or textures are integrated onto a part. Knurling is often used to integrate enhanced grip or styling to a part.

What is “milling"?
“Milling” is a process that can involve a variety of actions. Typically, milling involves the creation of flat surfaces, “slots,” or internal recesses on a part. A common use of milling is in the creation of a hexagon or square shape on a round part.

What is “slotting"?
“Slotting” is a type of “milling” where the saw blade creates a narrow ridge in a piece along an elongated path. (The “slot” can be of any size.)

What is “tapping"?
“Tapping” is where a thread is put in a drilled hole of a part. A nut is “tapped.”

What is “shaft work"?
“Shaft work” refers to the work on cylinders with features on both ends, such as flats or threads. Many shafts have key ways as a main feature.

What is “threading"?
“Threading” is where a thread is placed on the outside of a part. A screw is “threaded.”

Is it true that Magnus Screw Products’ president Ed Magnuski is a musician? Yes, it is. Ed plays in a Chicago band called “The Billy Goat Boys.”
He plays guitar and sings vocal harmonies.
